Donald Paul Henry was born March 24, 1949, to Calvin and Helen (Lindstad) Henry in Belle Fourche, SD. He attended school in several states, as they traveled with his dad’s work, settling in Sturgis in 1959. Don graduated from Sturgis High School in 1968.
In March of 1969, Don enlisted in the Army. He did basic training at Fort Benning, GA. In 1970, he deployed to Vietnam for one year. On leave after his tour, he met his “baby.” The next day he asked her to marry him and they were engaged that day. Don and Aneita Remington were married June 2, 1972, in Fairpoint, SD.
Paula Marie joined this family in May of 1973. In February of 1976, along came Donna D’Ann to complete the family.
Don served 11 years with the South Dakota National Guard, the last six of those being active Army attached to the Guard. He was proud to have served his country, as did his mother, father, and brother.
They moved to Arizona in 1985, where Don worked as a Corrections Officer for the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office. South Dakota drew them home in 1994, eventually settling in Stoneville, and recently moving to Sturgis. While at Stoneville, Don worked at Cenex in Union Center for 10 years.
Don loved to tinker with most anything, but cars especially. He usually had his little “grease monkey” (Donna) alongside him.
Don, 71, Sturgis, died Monday, July 20, 2020, at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital.
Don is survived by his wife of 48 years, Aneita; his daughter, Donna and Robert “Bob” Milburn; grandchildren, Timothy Curtis Wheeler, Amethyst Dawne Milburn, Emerald DeeLaynie Milburn, and Merijayne Daisha Milburn; great-grandchildren, Oakley Syrus Roberts and Emmitt Paul Wheeler; father, Calvin and Lanora Henry; brothers, John Henry, Milton and Kathy Riley, Ronnie Hatter, and Rodney and Phyllis Hatter; sisters, Bonnie and Jeff Gorr, LaVonne Gonzales, and Rhonda and Dean Stanley; brothers-in-law, Galen and Nancy Remington, and Gary and Roxanne Remington; sister-in-law, Adele and Terry Van Zee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Marie (Lindstad) Henry; daughter, Paula Marie Henry; brother, Ricky Don Hatter; and brothers-in-law, Marvin Dale Remington and Jose Gonzales.
Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 24, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2020, at the Union Center Community Baptist Church with Pastor Stan Rutland officiating. Burial will follow at Fairpoint Cemetery in Fairpoint, SD.
A memorial has been established.
