REFLECTIONS AND LEGACY - A MIGHTY FORTRESS IS OUR GOD

On the computer near my chair in the living room of our 85 year old house, I have compiled a playlist of music with hundreds of songs. I have titled the playlist Reflections and Legacies. These are more than titles, but rather songs that have impacted me along life's journey. It is in no way complete. My first song that I would like to share with you is Martin Luther's banner hymn, "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God".

Davey and Goliath I Did not grow up as what my friend, John Bones refers to as a "Minnesoda Luderan". But living in South Dakota where cows are the only thing that out number Lutherans, I certainly was exposed to the great Anthem, " A Mighty Fortress is our God" I am certain that I heard it most as a young child on the "Davey and Goliath" program aired on a local television station. Some of you may remember these early "claymation" charachters. However, I did grow up in congregation filled with Scandinavians that loved to sing this hymn of the faith, as well. I have grown to not only love the melody of this old hymn penned by Martin Luther, but also the words. They are powerful. Whenever the song comes on the radio or through the rotation of my playlist, I will generally crank up the volume and sing along. This is not a denominational hymn, but rather one that speaks of the majestic truth of the keeping power of the Almighty.

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; our helper he, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe does seek to work us woe; his craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God's own choosing. You ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he; Lord Sabaoth his name, from age to age the same; and he must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God has willed his truth to triumph through us. The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him; his rage we can endure, for lo! his doom is sure; one little word shall fell him.

That Word above all earthly powers no thanks to them abideth; the Spirit and the gifts are ours through him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; the body they may kill: God's truth abideth still; his kingdom is forever!
